For teachers, by a teacher

Classroom tools that never see your students' data.

Buy a tool once and run it on your own computer or in your own Google account. You don't make an account, nothing goes to a cloud database, and there are no trackers.

  • Roster, seating and grades handled
  • No accounts. No subscriptions.
  • Works offline, even on a Chromebook

Pinned to the bulletin board: our privacy promise

We can't leak what we never have.

Most ed-tech sends student information to someone else's server. Our tools don't have a server to send it to.

Zero telemetry

No analytics, no tracking pixels, no "phone home." Every web app ships with a browser rule that blocks it from connecting to the internet at all.

Local-first

The web apps are single files that run in your browser, even from a USB drive with Wi-Fi off. The Google tools run inside your own Drive.

100% yours

You keep the files and you keep the data. If we closed tomorrow, every tool you bought would still work.

How it works

Two kinds of kits. Pick your comfort level.

Off-Grid Web Apps

Beginner friendly

A single file you download and open. It works on Chromebooks, Macs and PCs, and you don't install anything.

  1. Download the kitYou get a .zip with the app and a one-page Quick Start guide.
  2. Open index.htmlDouble-click it and it opens in your browser. Keep it on your desktop or a USB drive.
  3. TeachYour class data stays in that browser on that computer. You can export a backup file whenever you like.

Google Workspace Power Tools

For power users

Automations built into Google Sheets and Docs. They run under your own Google account and we can't see anything they do.

  1. Make a copyOne click copies the template, with its script, into your own Drive.
  2. Authorize onceA short video walks you through Google's "unverified app" screen and explains why it appears.
  3. Use the new menuA new menu shows up in your Sheet. The code is yours to read or change.
Free for every teacher

Build Your Class: one list, every tool.

Type your students once, or import them from a spreadsheet, and export a single class list that every Sandbox tool can read. It even shortens last names to initials for you, so you share only what each tool needs.

  • Free to download and share with colleagues
  • Works offline, and nothing leaves your computer
  • Reads CSV files from Google Sheets or Excel

A small .zip file with the app, a one-page guide and a spreadsheet template. No email or sign-up required.

The shop

Small tools that do one job well.

Each kit lists exactly what it stores and where it keeps it, so there's no fine print.

Name Picker & Group Maker

Fair cold-calling that remembers who's had a turn, plus balanced groups in one click.

Stores: class rosters, in this browser only.

Why?

Why isn't there a subscription? Subscriptions pay for servers, and we don't run any. Your tools live on your computer and in your Drive, so a monthly fee would only be paying us for nothing.

Built in a classroom, not a boardroom.

7 years teaching 4 years as a technology coach

Hi, I'm Dan. Since AI and new technology arrived in classrooms, student privacy has come up in almost every conversation I have. So have subscriptions. Teachers are asked to sign up for one more monthly tool. Administrators are asked to spend hundreds of dollars on an app that might fall flat, or might collect the very data districts are trying to protect.

I built The Teacher's Sandbox so teachers can keep doing great work without paying for another subscription or waiting on budget approval. As a coach, I know what teachers actually need, and my job is to bridge the gap between easy technology and faster work. Every kit here is simple to use, costs one payment, and never sends student data anywhere.

The name is on purpose. You already carry a toolbox of skills as a teacher, and this is your sandbox next to it: a place to try new tools. It's yours in the other sense too. Your class data belongs to you and stays with you.

FAQ

Good questions. (Hand up!)

Do I need to create an account?

No. You check out through our payment provider and get your download or template link right away. We never ask you or your students to log in.

Where does my class data actually go?

Web Apps store data in your browser's local storage, on the computer you're using, and nowhere else. Each app includes a Content Security Policy, a standard browser rule that stops the page from making any network connections.

Power Tools keep everything inside the Google Sheet or Doc you copied into your own Drive. We never get access to it.

Will it work on a school Chromebook?

Yes. Web Apps open straight from the Chromebook's Files app or a USB drive. Power Tools work anywhere Google Sheets does, as long as your district allows Apps Script (most do).

What's the "Google hasn't verified this app" warning?

Google shows it for any script that lives in your own Drive and hasn't gone through Google's public review. That's the point: it's your private copy, not a service we run. The video that comes with each kit shows you how to review what the script can access and continue safely.

My district has to approve new tools. Can you help?

Yes. Send your IT team our Dear IT Department page. It explains the technical details in their language, including how to check for themselves that nothing leaves the device.

What if I lose my data?

Every Web App has a one-click "Export backup" button that saves a file you can keep anywhere. Power Tools data lives in Google Drive, which keeps a version history.
